...and offer you the experience of watching someone fumble, because I think maybe that's what art should offer: an opportunity to recognize our common humanity and vulnerability. So, rather than being up here pretending I'm an expert in anything, I'm just telling you off the bat that I don't know anything.

Wayne Dyer The wake is not what drives the boat 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace 2002
(Credited to Alan Watts) The wake is just a trail that is left behind, that's all it is. And so is the wake of your life. And the wake doesn't make the boat go, and neither does the wake of your life the reason why your life is going in the direction that it is. The wake is a trail that is left behind, and it's an illusion to believe that it is the cause of your suffering, or your struggles, or your difficulty. Give it up, let it go. Embrace it, let it go, get help doing that if you must, and then move into the now.
Kyle MacLachlan (voice), David Lynch (creator), Mark Frost (writer) Every day, once a day, give yourself a present Twin Peaks: Season 1, episode 6 1990

Philip Glass Collaboration: Part of the inspiration comes from somebody else Interview during Metamorphosis performance on BBC's The Late Show
One of the nice things about collaboration is that part of the inspiration comes from somebody else. You share everything, but you also share the difficulties. But when you're really by yourself, well, that's it; the focus is on you and you have to do it all yourself.

Wayne Dyer Making happiness dependent on people being what we think they should be 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace 2002
What most of us do in our relationships, and why they are not as successful as we would like them to be, is that we become attached, and we tell ourself, that if this person behaves in a way that I find offensive, then I can't be happy. I make my happiness, my fulfillment dependent upon those people that I love being what I think that they should be.

Ken's 9/10/16 edit: Removed all instances of a sharp pulsing electronic sound

How you become brave enough to take one step beyond and go into something that you're not really that experienced at.
The Magnetic Fields The Dreaming Moon Get Lost 1995
Claire Danes (voice), Winnie Holzman (writer) You agree to have a certain personality My So Called Life: Pilot episode 1994

If you've got a thing that you're exploring, then explore it truthfully. I mean, if you want to do that, if you're interested in doing what you want to do in the world then do it. Explore it truthfully, continue to try to find your voice, which is an ongoing, life-long process. Just be dilligent and somewhat courageous in your attempts to do your stuff in the world.

Wayne Dyer The creative source will fulfill your belief in shortages Power of Intention 2005
The creative source in your life. This source reacts to your belief in shortages with a fulfillment of your belief. If you believe there's shortages out there and you can't attract them into your life...if you come to this creative source with a belief that there are shortages in terms of your life, it will fulfill your belief. If you believe that you can't be healed, if you believe you can't be happy, if you believe that you have to be miserable, if you believe that you can't attract the right person...and you come to this source with a belief in shortages, it will fulfill your belief.

Wallace Shawn, Merwin Mondesir (voices), Steven Schwartz, Richard Dooling (writers) The living make such meaningless distinctions Critical Care movie 1997
I get to talk to people who at long last know what's important. The living make such meaningless distinctions: How should I cut my hair, what kind of a car should I buy, will interest rates go up? (I don't care about any of that stuff!) Precisely! All those things: The products you consumed, the politics you debated, the people you knew...all your life's moments, big and small - they look very tiny now!
Holcombe Waller Hardliners (Ken edit) Into the Dark Unknown 2011
Just looped opening for a while
Ken Be open about your life 2015
Just be open about your life and who you are and what you like. Don't be ashamed when people ask you what you're working on, just tell them. It doesn't matter what the thing is. You will find the people who respond to what it is that you're doing, and you will let them love you by doing that.
Ida My Fair, My Dark (Ken edit) My Fair, My Dark 2006
Ken's 9/10/16 edit: Extended section into favorite loop, to make room for spoken sample
Chris Cooper (voice), Charlie Kaufman (writer) Neither the flower nor the insect will ever understand the significance of their lovemaking Adaptation movie 2002
What's so wonderful is that every one of these flowers has specific relationship with the insect that pollinates it. There's a certain orchid that looks exactly like a certain insect, so the insect is drawn to this flower, its double, its soulmate, and wants nothing more than to make love to it. And after the insect flies off, it spots another soulmate flower and makes love to it, thus pollinating it. And neither the flower nor the insect will ever understand the significance of their lovemaking. How could they know that because of their little dance, the world lives. But it does. By simply doing what they're designed to do, something large and magnificent happens. In this sense they show us how to live, how the only barometer you have is your heart. How, when you spot your flower, you can't let anything get in your way.

Don't let fear and common sense stop you, and don't let these modern-day fools disconnect you from the truth. Don't speak your love unless you can back it up, and don't dream big dreams and pinch yourself to wake up.
Fen Swale circles & a starry sky (Ken edit) I am a bird 2014
Endless loops of piano circles, into vocal closing
Andre Gregory (voice, writer), Wallace Shawn (writer) I would actually see that thing that is alive in that leaf My Dinner With Andre 1981
I remember being in the woods, and I would look at a leaf, and I would actually see that thing that is alive in that leaf. And then I remember just running through the woods as fast as I could, with this incredible laugh coming out of me, and really being in that state where laughter and tears seem to merge.
Zooey Deschanel (voice), Paul Schneider (writer, voice), David Gordon Green (director, writer) I've got a secret...hello hello hello All the Real Girls movie 2003
Hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello. Keep going. Hello hello hello hello...
Greg Weddig Alcatraz cormorants One-Minute Vacations 2005
"This recording was made at a Brant's Cormorant "blind" in the abandoned Model Industry building on the west side of the Alcatraz. I made it the evening San Francisco's KFOG radio station presented their Kaboom fireworks. As the shells started bursting in air, Western Gulls were silhouetted against the sky fleeing from their nesting area on the east side of Alcatraz at the Parade ground. Strangely the many nesting pairs of cormorants just below the mics seemed more upset at the fleeing seagulls than the fireworks themselves. After the final shots rang out the cormorants continued their grunting, gracking, and growling, as if nothing had happened."
Charlie Kaufman Failure is a badge of honor; it means you risked failure BAFTA and BFI Screenwriters Lecture Series 2011
Let's not worry about failure. Failure is a badge of honor; it means you risked failure. And if you don't risk failure, you're never going to do anything that's different than what you've already done, or what somebody else has done. And just know that, that that's the choice you're making when you won't put yourself at jeopardy like that.
